Judith

Judith van der RoosHoi, my name is Judith & I am married to my precious Nina, yes that is right I did say we are married. In Holland we have the freedom to marry who we love. Gay marriage is legal here I am very glad to say, because surely the right to love who we want to love is the most basic of all human rights.

Nina and I have been together some nine years now, and I have enjoyed every single day. There are few people in this world who can are fortunate enough to be entirely happy with their life partner, so I consider myself exceedingly gifted in life.

Having had many adventures in our lives we have for the last few embarked on the biggest adventure of all - children. We adopted a wonderfully vibrant disabled girl called Hilke, and a little deaf boy called Nicholas. These two amazing little people have taught us so much and enriched us in many ways. Now we have embarking on the next stage of our life adventure, On June 15th at 04.04 Nina gave birth to our first babyy, little Mariaska Sabina.

Family

Judith van der RoosMy sister and I were Born in Germany on a British Base to an English Father and Dutch Mother. Our real Mother & Father died when my sister and I were very little, so we were fostered with relatives. Our foster parents Harry & Yolanda adopted us and gave me a wonderful and happy childhood. They taught their daughters to be a free thinkers and to never let our lives be constrained by others, and to find our own way in life. They are both alive & well I am glad to say, and living near Arnhem. Their current occupation appears to be spoiling their grandchildren and pestering us for more grandchildren to spoil !

Career

Judith van der RoosAt 17 I joined the Royal Air Force and went into the medical service, & taking my first degree in Radiography. When I was twenty I was severely injured (see Violence), and as a result I lost seventy percent of my hearing. After two years in hospital I returned to serve four more years active service in the military before I had to leave after what was left of my hearing completely failed (see deafness), leaving me deaf. I loved my time in the service and was lucky enough to see a great deal of the world, and make a great many friends. It was while in the RAF that I met Nina, she was an army nurse in the Koninklijke Landmacht (Royal Dutch Army), our mutual attraction was immediate and we have been together ever since. Before I left the service I was able to complete another degree in Physiology. After leaving the service I came home to Holland, and continued to work in the medical field. I work part time as a medical radiographer, and also work on some physiological studies, my lack of hearing (see deafness) has not proved to be any handicap in this respect. I love my work with it's combination of physics and anatomy & physiology, but career is never allowed to take precident over family.

Nina

Nina van der RoosHello, my name is Nina and Judith is my Wife. We are mothers to our three wonderful adopted children Mariaske, Nicholas and Hilke. I met Judith nine years ago and decided to ask her out, and since that first date I have never looked back or had cause to regret my decision. Judith and I married in December 2004, and immediately adopted our two lovely children, both of whom we have been fostering for some time before.

Hilke had been fostered with us for most the previous year, then after her birth mother died we adopted her. She is a very loveable, independent child who deals with her disability and with life with equal energy. Nicholas has been the surprise addition to our family. He is a sweet little boy and for me it was love at first sight. Despite his behavioural problems and disability we adopted him very swiftly. I am immensely proud to hear them call me their “Mama”.

Now I have had our first baby, Mariaska Sabina was eagerly awaited by her big brother and sister, by her other mother and by four grandparents, and several aunties. In a lesbian relationship there are two mothers, the birth mother and parental mother. No one mother is more important than the other, but I am honoured to have the support and love of my beautiful and serene wife who has no equal as a mother. You can read about the pregnancy and birth on our Blog site here.

Family

Nina van der RoosI come from a small and not terribly close knit family. My family life then was drastically short of good parenting and core values, so I have been determined not repeat the mistakes of my own parents. I was born near Amsterdam, where my mother still lives, she is a civil servant in the Government. My dad is also a civil servant, though in a different department. My parents are divorced now, they divorced when I was a teenager and now certainly appear to be much happier for it, though they can both still be rather tiresome as divorced never hindered their ability to fight with one another!

Career

Nina van der RoosI was educated in and around Amsterdam and joined the Koninklijke Landmacht (Dutch Army) where I trained to become a registered nurse, passing my nursing degree some years ago now. Last year I completed my second degree and now I am also a Midwife. In Midwifery I believe I have found my true calling. There is no greater satisfaction is seeing my fellow women through their pregnancies and then helping them to birth their babies safely into the world while making birth a positive, joyful, and enjoyable experience. I have been in the army for some twelve years and I am on course to complete my full twenty years in the service.
